NYSC Goal Finally Met
With respect to the goal of establishing the NYSC CDS and a need to fulfill the mission/vision of the Nigeria prison service, the NYSC Legal Aid CDS group of Ogbomoso North Oyo State paid a visit to the Medium security prison Abolongo. According to the president of the CDS group, Adeyemi Babatunde, he felt a need to visit the prison yard after the charge of the Assistant Controller General of Nigeria Prison Service Zonal Corina for Zone A, Ogundana Jerome in 25 June 2017 when he emphasized "we urge corporate organizations and well to do individuals to assist us".
The legal aid CDS group under the supervision of their legal advisers Barr. Olajumoke Ogunquit and Nathaniel Wombo Nge visited the 357 prisoners in a prison yard that had a bed capacity for 139 prisoners.
The group deemed it fit to fulfill the mission/vision of the Nigeria Prison Service "to establish prison service through excellent penal practice, seeking lasting change in offenders' attitudes, values and behaviors and ensure successful reintegration into the society". Mrs Chinaka Fransisca, an entrepreneur who lectured the prisoners on their need to learn a trade or skill during their stay in the prison so that they can have something to fall on and also successfully facilitate their integration into the society subsequently after release. She also taught the prisoners how to make liquid soap detergent.
For prisoners charged with minor cases, the group enlightened them on how to take actions that could hasten their release.
Finally, the NYSC Legal aid Ogbomoso North made their intention of providing lawyers to some of the prisoners with minor cases to hasten their release known and also donated a sum of money to the Nigeria Prison Service for the maintenance of the Prison.
